Classically trained with a love for riot grrl and 70’s NY punk, maudlyn monroe is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. Their voice, with its three octave range, has been called "angelic" and "soulful", "bird-like" and "desperate", and lends to everything from folk contemplation to Russian mafia murder ballads (in the original Russian!).

On their most recent album, Heart-shaped rock (2025), their vocals recall the intimacy of Brandi Carlisle mixed with the intensity of Sleater Kinney. Lead single “Metal star” combines country and grunge in its guitar’s poignant “twangs and pangs,” while the atmospheric “Canyon song” blends haunting theremin and soaring piano soundscapes. “South Dakota” brings cinematic string bass and flute together in a moody arrangement.

Colorado-based, they’ve played FoCoMX and Bohemian Nights festivals; opened for beloved folk artist/physicist Jonathan Byrd; shared the stage with folk artist Crispy Watkins and punk band Bongi Perez; and played bari sax in the surf band the Von Hodads. They released widow’s daughter, their debut country-folk album (as “slp”) in 2011, and greedy pushy needy, their self-recorded/engineered folk-punk album, in 2023. They are currently working on a new EP and a cabaret act.

maudlyn monroe:

Classically trained riot grrl.

...surely my kind of artist. Edgy and powerful, aggressive and then sweet, with constant and complete control over [their] performance.
— Tom Bianchi - The Backstage Beat
Voluptuous and intense, with a spectacular vocal range...[maudlyn monroe] scintillates and charms.

4 out of 5 stars...”widow’s daughter” finds the balance between old-timey and contemporary tracks...
— Brian F. Johnson - The Marquee
I was glued...[maudlyn monroe] commands the mic as an Emiliana Torrini would, and not with a soulful shyness, but a soulful propensity like they don’t have any other way. They are strong and efficient...They are fearless on stage...I can tell they believe it.
